Last night David Wilkerson died as the result of a car crash in East Texas. His wife Gwen is in critical condition in hospital in Tyler.
The Assemblies of God pastor from Hammond, Indiana was founder of Teen Challenge, a ministry to teenage gang members and drug addicts in New York, and is thus in a real sense the father of all Christian ministries serving drug addicts, gang members, prostitutes and others comprising the urban street scene.
His book “The Cross and the Switchblade”, the movie made from it, as well as the movie “Run Baby Run” about early Teen Challenge convert Nicky Cruz, were important influences on my early Christian life.
In later life David Wilkerson founded several other ministries and the non-denominational Times Square Church in New York City.
