BWIII on Rob Bell’s “Love Wins”

There has been quite a kerfuffle in the Christian blogosphere in the past few weeks over a new book by emergent mega church pastor Rob Bell, “Love Wins”. Accusations of judgment before even reading the book were made against a number of prominent Christian leaders, including Pastor John Piper whose response to the book was a tweeted “Farewell Rob Bell”.

I have not read the book. I don’t plan to spend any money on it, so unless someone in my circle of acquaintances happens to have it and lend it to me, I don’t plan to read it. So I will refrain from posting my own opinion on it, even though I have of course, from what I have heard and read (excerpts were available online), formed an opinion.

However, I just came across a unique resource for anyone wanting to get at least some idea what all the noise is about without actually reading the book:

Ben Witherington III, in his blog The Bible and Culture, did a chapter-by-chapter review and analysis of the book. Here are the posts for each chapter, as well as a couple others relevant to the topic:

One of the main charges against Rob Bell from those who had or had not read his book, and were complaining about it, revolved around the question of Hell and the fate of unbelievers. Before delving into the book with the posts above, Ben posted these three articles on that general subject:

I find Ben Witherington, Professor of New Testament at Asbury Seminary in Kentucky, as well as at St. Andrews University, Scotland, a thought-provoking writer and teacher and his take on Rob Bell’s book certainly carries more weight with me than many of the other comments I have seen.
