Westboro “Baptists” — God forbid!

Since ORF Online has seen fit to post a lengthy report about the Westboro “Baptist” Church it needs to be clearly stated that this “church” made up largely of the members of “Pastor” Fred Phelps’ extensive family has even less to do with legitimate Baptists and Baptist Churches than Nazi-Fan and “Bishop” Richard Williamson has to do with the Roman Catholic Church.
One feature of the American religious landscape is the fact that anyone can call themselves anything they like, so that even though the Phelps-Clan is not a member of any legitimate Baptist denomination they have every right to call themselves “Baptist”.
The US Supreme Court recently even ruled that the disgusting and hateful demonstrations staged by the Phelps family in close proximity to soldiers’ funerals are covered by their right to freedom of speech.
Despite this victory, so reports ORF Online, the Phelps clan plans to re-locate to Israel, where they hope to convert 144000 Jews to Christ, and thus to speed up Christ’s return to earth.
I would have no objection to another 144000 Jews finding the Jewish Messiah Jesus (in Hebrew, Yeshuah ha Mashiach); but as a member of a Baptist Church I hope that God and the Israeli authorities will see to it that not one single Jew is converted to the religion of hate propagated by the Phelps clan.
